An Interview with Artist Lisa Frances Judd

Thursday, August 15th, 2019

We recently caught up with Lisa Frances Judd on Skype to find out more about her artwork and how she uses Fineline™ Applicators. Lisa is a professional artist who resides near the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. She is a big fan of our non-clogging Fineline™ Applicator products and frequently uses them in her artwork with her own mix of acrylic paint.

Lisa Frances Judd paints a variety of subjects that are influenced by nature and landscapes. One of Lisa’s most recent paintings, Abundant Wildflowers, was recently selected for an international showcase. Her style is abstract/semi-abstract, fun and playful and she does not follow traditional painting rules. In fact, she is completely self-taught.  Using her vivid imagination, she has developed her own distinctive style over many years based on her passion for nature, colour, patterns and texture.

Lisa has been painting full time since 2011 and her original paintings, licenced products, and prints can be found all around Australia and the world. She is currently a featured artist on Australia’s largest online art gallery, Bluethumb. Her works include contemporary, abstract, and commissioned artwork for business or personal clients.

How To Use Masking/Resist Fluid

Tuesday, June 4th, 2019

Fineline™ Applicators Masking Fluid and Resist Fluid are one of our most popular products because it is so much better than the traditional method of applying masking fluid. Masking/Resist Fluid typically comes in a jar where you have to use your brush to apply the product. There are 2 problems with this method. 1. Because the masking fluid dries quickly, your product will degrade quickly when open. 2. The masking fluid can destroy your brushes if used for long periods of time.

Fineline™ Applicators
Masking Fluid

Fineline™ masking fluid is far superior to the traditional application due to the non-clogging cap-wire closure system. This allows for precise placement of the product without the mess, wastage, and clogging issues.  It flows beautifully out either the 18 gauge standard tip or the 20 gauge fine tip. You can also adjust how much masking/resist fluid comes out of the bottle depending on how hard you squeeze. Fineline™ Masking Fluid is also one of the only, if not only, liquid latex masking fluids that can be used safely by individuals who are allergic to natural latex rubber.

Depending on the type of effect that you are wanting to achieve, you may start with a white background, coloured, or pre-painted. Here are some steps to get you started.

Step 1: Choose your surface and make sure it is dry. (watercolour paper, cardstock, canvas, pottery, wood, glass, etc)

Step 2: Apply the masking fluid to where you want. Be sure to place the cap-wire back on when not using it.

Step 3: Allow masking fluid to dry completely. The time it takes to dry depends on the weather and how much is applied. You can speed up the drying process if you place your work in the sun or use a hair dryer.

Step 4: Apply the medium you want over the masking/resist fluid. Some suitable mediums include: watercolour, ink, dyes, ceramic glaze, acrylic paint (be sure the acrylic paint isn’t too thick over the masking fluid).

Step 1, 2, and 3

Step 4

Step 5: Leave and let dry, keeping in mind the longer you leave it, the more difficult it is to remove.

Step 6: (optional) You can keep adding masking fluid/paint to add layers and depth to your work.

Step 7: The moment has come to remove the masking fluid! With clean hands, simply apply a bit of pressure and rub off the masking fluid. Depending on the surface you are working on, you may want to use tweezers or use some dried extra masking fluid to help coax the masking fluid away from the surface.

Just A Tip: How To Put The Fineline™ Applicator Cap Back On

Wednesday, May 15th, 2019

Do you have bad eyes, or perhaps shaky hands? If so, you might have difficulty in putting the Fineline cap-wire back on. But don’t worry, we have a trick that will help you put the cap back on with ease every time!

When putting the cap-wire back into the needle, its important to remember to make sure you have the right cap-wire for the right applicator tip. It will not be airtight if you put a fine tip 20-gauge cap-wire into the 18 gauge standard tip needle.

Step 1. Place your fingertip behind the applicator needle. This is where the medium comes out of. This will make the process 2-dimensional. You may need to wipe off the end of the tip to ensure your hands don’t get messy.

Step 2. Line up the cap-wire needle as close as possible to the applicator tip.

Step 3. Use your finger to help guide the cap-wire back into the needle.

Voila! You should now be able to put the cap back on without any trouble. Enjoy creating!

How to fill your Fineline™ Applicator bottle

Tuesday, May 7th, 2019

You have your bottles, and your medium ready to go. Now what? Well, Fineline™ Applicators comes with either the oval or tube bottle but it doesn’t matter which one you use, that depends on personal preference. The oval bottle is the original design and has been the most popular. However, since the tube bottles have been available, they have been extremely popular as many find them easier to squeeze. Either, way they have the same size opening for you to pour your medium in.

To fill your Fineline™ Applicator bottle, all you need to do is take off the entire cap and pour your medium into the bottle. Depending on what your medium is, and how steady your hands are, you may want to use a funnel to reduce spillage. Some of the mediums that you may use include: acrylic paint, glass paint, glue, henna, inks, dyes, and many more! And provided that whatever medium you use is water soluble, you can simply rinse it out with warm soapy water and use it with a different medium.

The oval bottle holds slightly more volume at 37ml, while the tube holds 30ml. The applicator tips are interchangeable so you can mix and match between the bottles. No matter which bottle you decide to go with, both ergonomic but many artists prefer the tube bottle because its slightly easier to squeeze. If you fill the bottle with a thicker medium, you may want to use a larger applicator tip (18g standard tip) so it’s easier to squeeze. If you are using something that’s very runny, you may prefer the fine applicator tip (18g).

Tips to Using Fineline™ Applicators with Glue

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2019

Hello friends! For our first blog post we would like to show you how to use Fineline™ Applicators with glue. The patented Fineline™ Applicators are the first precision applicators that use an air-tight non-clogging cap wire closure system to ensure that the applicator and your preferred water-based adhesive are always ready for immediate use. While you may use any water-based adhesive with Fineline Applicators, our Red Top Glue is superior as it has the right consistency for the glue to come out of the applicator without squeezing too hard. It all depends on what you prefer!

Mod Podge

Say your favourite glue is Mod Podge. Here is what you’ll need. The first step is to decant the Mod Podge into the Fineline Applicator bottle and tightly screw the applicator back on. You’re ready to go! Now, the best size tip in our opinion is the Standard 18g tip (yellow tip). This is because glue has a thicker consistency so therefore you’ll need more pressure to squeeze out the glue. This is compared to using a thinner medium like ink where very little pressure pressure is needed on the bottle.

Standard tip 18g

This doesn’t mean the fine tip 20g applicator won’t work with glue! However, because of the finer (smaller) tip, you’ll be squeezing harder for the glue to come out. This is great option for very small amount of glue, such as needed in model train repairs, glueing on diamontes, etc.

Fineline’s Red Top Glue is similar to a PVA glue. It is a multi-purpose premium quality water-based adhesive that comes with a Standard 18g tip and an extra bottle of glue. Red Top Glue offers exceptional bonding strength, is fast drying and dries clear. Ideal for use with paper, textiles, wood, untreated leather, and other porous surfaces. Our glue is non-toxic and formulated to work with the reusable Fineline Precision Applicators and uses our exclusive non-clogging cap-wire closure system, so your Red Top Glue is always ready for immediate use. Red Top Glue comes with two cylinder bottles and one standard tip 18g Fineline Applicator.
